I got an idea from reading online. I live on a 3 acre farm and raise chickens and try to raise a garden. I am a rookie at using power tools as I was never taught this as a child/teen. However I am trying to become self sufficient.
.
Here is my conviction this year: I want to cook my 2015 Thanksgiving dinner with food I grew myself. If not all then most.
.
Here are some thoughts on my menu next year (knowing it will change)
Home raised turkey
Cornbread stuffing: including ground corn, celery, sage and thyme, eggs, onions, turkey broth
Roasted veggies: turnips, potatos, onions, sweet potatos and carrots
Giblet gravy-turkey giblets, turkey broth, milk, whole wheat flour
Greens cooked with onions and bacon (i am not sure how I am going to pull off the bacon)
Mashed garlic potatos
Whole Wheat Rolls
Homemade butter (not sure how I am going to pull this off either)
.
So I have never raised wheat before but will need to as I will need flour ....a lot of flour. I will also need to raise corn to dry and grind.
.
My garden beds need a lot of work as the soil was purchased and was horrible. I need to invest in compost and start worms to make more.
My 3 compost piles were taken over with bermuda grass and I lost them all. My herb garden also was taken over with bermuda grass. Although I want to go organic I will be using round up outside of my gardens to keep this kind of grass from entering the garden. As it runs under ground and roots if a leaf or branch bends over and touches the dirt in the raised beds, it is hard to control.
.
My daughter lives in the city but has a yard. My son lives in the wilds of Oklahoma and hunts.
This could be an interesting Feast.
So who is with me?
